イギリスでの留学を終え、ユリアはポーランドのAcademy of Art にて彫刻を、エリカはオーストラリアに渡りImage Management Film&Television Screen Acting courseにて演技、画家Archie Graham氏の師事を受け油絵を学ぶ。

70年代の日本を彷彿とさせるようなエネルギッシュなパワーに魅せられ、1999年に姉妹はタイに住居を移す。ユリアはアートを学びつつ脚本・詩などを書き始め、エリカはKalwin International Instituteで衣装デザインを学ぶ。日本とタイを往復しつつ芸術家としての道を歩み始めた姉妹は、やがて二人の才能を融合させて一つの大きな作品を制作したいと考えるようになり、バンコクで絵画の個展を開催し自主制作映画の制作費を集める。愛媛県の島を舞台にしたキッチュなガールズフィルムである第2作目の自主制作映画「TUTU」が「ぴあフィルムフェスティバル」に入選。

2002年からは本格的に拠点を故郷の愛媛に移し、“世界が舞台”をモットーに子供たちを主体とした何色にも染まらない独特で幅広い芸術活動を行うTORANOKO Performing Arts Companyを立ち上げる。TORANOKOは、日本ではまだ馴染みの薄いPerforming Artsの分野を感性豊かな子供たちとともに切り開き、日本の地方都市にいながらグローバルな視野を持った活動を行う画期的な総合芸術グループである。その先駆けとして発表したのが、愛媛の山間部にある熱帯植物園を舞台とし、ダンスと音楽を融合させた芝居「残夢」公演である。芸術を通しての町の活性化プロジェクトとしてスタートした本公演は2009年よりスタートし、9年間にわたるロングラン公演となった。「残夢」公演の芸術性が高く評価され、2010年にはポーランド・ケルツエ市市制1000年記念芸術祭に招待され、ポーランドの3都市にて「残夢2010」を8回公演し、延べ2000人を動員。実演者の少女たちはジャパニーズエンジェルと呼ばれ人気を博した。

2007年、「TUTU」のぴあ入選をきっかけにユリアが、2009年にエリカが早稲田大学大学院国際情報通信研究科に入学し、恩師である安藤紘平教授に出会う。2008年、ユリアは大学院時代に日立maxell・ぴあからの依頼を受け短編映画「Canna Lily」を監督。一方エリカは2009年 にShort Film「Miuro」を監督し、初監督にして下北沢映画祭グランプリ候補に選出された。二作品とも、TORANOKOの子供たちによるダンスシーンを大きくフューチャーし、ミュージカル映画の復権に挑んだ意欲作である。

寺山修司と共に天井桟敷で活動した経験を持つ安藤教授からの勧めもあり、2011年より寺山修司の少女詩集を元にした舞台制作をスタートさせる。2011年、寺山修司原作「踊りたいけど踊れない」を東京にて公演。2013年、日本文化を世界に紹介する”JAPAN WEEK IN POLAND”に参加。ポーランド、ポズナン市のオペラ座にて寺山修司原作「思い出盗まれた」を上演し、寺山の天井桟敷と同じくヨーロッパ公演を実現させた。2014年、文化庁「メディア芸術祭　松山展」にてメディアパフォーマンス、寺山修司原作「踊りたいけど踊れない」を上演。2015年、残夢2015・寺山修司原作「海のリボン」 を熱帯植物園にて上演。寺山の元夫人で演劇・映画プロデューサーの九條今日子さんからのサポートもあり、姉妹は寺山作品の次世代の後継者として注目が集まっている。

2015年から、世界各国の映画祭で80以上の受賞をしているアニメーション作家・山村浩二氏の「マイブリッジの糸」(第15回文化庁メディア芸術祭優秀賞受賞)とのコラボレーション企画、メディアパフォーマンス「マイブリッジの糸」を始動。2016年、ポーランド、プシェミシル市国際芸術祭に正式招待。満を辞して開催された国内公演として横浜、BankART Studio NYKにて公演。映像（アニメーション）と演劇、ダンス、音楽を融合させた総合芸術、メディアパフォーマンスという分野を確立した画期的な公演となった。2017年ポーランド、クラコフ市“Etiuda & Anima国際アニメーション映画祭”に正式招待され、本映画祭で初のライブパフォーマンスを成功させる。ポズナン市“Teatr Muzyczny”にて公演、ワルシャワ市“Dom Stuki WIOLINOWA”にて上映会を開催。クラコフの映画祭では立ち見が出るほどの満員、ポズナニでは前衛的なパフォーマンスが高い評価を得て、観客を魅了した。

2019年、寺山修司の少女詩集から着想を得た映画「赤糸で縫いとじられた物語」を制作。監督、脚本、美術監督をユリアが、プロデューサー、衣装、音楽プロデュース、出演をエリカが務め、抜群の美的センスで観る者を魅了する独特の世界観を創り上げ、世界各国の映画祭で高い評価を得た。

Chopin Village Festival 2020のオンライン上映のために制作したミュージックビデオ “Hide & Seek”が、世界の音楽映画祭で受賞。音楽の分野でも独自のアートセンスを発揮し注目を集めている。

2021年、短編映画「寓」(石原理衣 & 小野川浩幸監督)にアートディレクターとして参加し、美術、衣装、ヘアメイクを担当。 シッチェス映画祭にてBEST SHORT FILM NEW VISIONを受賞。

2022年、JAPAN FILM COMMISSION企画の日本プロモーション映像「33 Thirty three」を 制作。

第75回 カンヌ国際映画祭・JAPANブースにて上映される。​11月、太宰治原作「女生徒」を内子座にて上演。レトロ～ポップミュージックが全編に流れる、世代を超えたエンターテイメントで大好評を得た。

姉妹には日本のアヴァンギャルドなアート作品を受けとめる特異な感受性が備わっており、彼女らはアーティスティックな言語を多感な少女たちを通して、美しくそして思慮深く表現している。それは新たな芸術、新たな世界観を生み出す試みである。TORANOKO Performing Arts Companyでは歌、ダンス、演技、アートのレッスンを通して高いパフォーマンススキル及び人間性を育む教育を行っており、美しくしなやかに鍛えられた身体を有し、気品と優雅さを兼ね備えた子供の育成には世界的に高い評価を得ている。

PROFILE OF YURIA MATSUSHITA

YURIA MATSUSHITA  is now recognized as one of the world’s finest up and coming young film directors. Born in Ehime, Japan in 1977, her travels to study a variety of different art forms in many parts of the world have given her a global perspective which is readily apparent in her work. Yuria’s father Bunji is Japanese and has been recognized as one of Japan’s earliest and most important advocates of international understanding. Yuria’s mother Elzbieta is Polish from a family of artists, architects and stage actors. 

Yuria learned classical ballet from the age of four. As a young adult she graduated from the London College of Fashion in 1998, specializing in makeup and hair for performing arts, then in 1999 she studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Art in Poznan, Poland before moving in 2000 to Thailand, where she studied classical art and began to compose poetry and scripts for film and stage performances. In 2001 her independent film “Tutu” was nominated for the PIA Film Festival. 

In 2002 Yuria moved her base back to her hometown in Japan where she was joined by her sister Erika, a well credentialed choreographer and costume designer, to establish the TORANOKO Performing Arts Company. TORANOKO specializes in a specific form of visual art combining a broad spectrum of theatrical art with various exhibitions and children playing the main parts. The children of TORANOKO have a motto - “The World is Our Stage”. In 2008 Yuria directed “Canna Lily” for the Hitachi Maxell Hi-Vision Theatre. She then directed performances of “Zanmu” which were set in a tropical garden and began in Kielce, Poland in 2009 to celebrate the thousandth year of the town’s foundation, and which ran for nine years. In that same year 2009, Yuria was awarded her Master’s Degree from Wasada University’s Global Information and Telecommunications School, specializing in digital cinematography. 

In 2011 Yuria started a stage production based on Shuji Terayama’s book of poetry for girls. Under the directorship of Yuria and her sister Erika, the TORANOKO company performed Terayama’s “I Want to Dance But I Can’t Dance” in Tokyo. In 2013 TORANOKO performed Terayama’s “Stolen Memories” in the Poznan Opera House in Poland during Japan Week. 

In 2015, in collaboration with famous animation film director Koji Yamamura, Yuria began a stage production of Yamamura’s most acclaimed film “Muybridge’s Strings” during the International Festival in Przemysl, Poland. 

In 2017, under Yuria’s directorship, TORANOKO performed “Muybridge’s Strings and Rhythm of Motion” at BankART NYK in Yokohama, Japan and was officially invited to perform at the Etiuda & Anima Film Festival in Krakow, then in Teatr Muzyczny, Poznan and Dom Sztuki Wiolinowa in Warsaw.

In 2019 Yuria directed in film, Shuji Terayama’s “A Story Sewn and Bound with a Red Thread” for which she scripted and art-directed the production, with her sister Erika as the producer and costume designer. This film has been publicly acclaimed and so far has won no less than ten awards in film festivals around the world. These include the Special Jury Award at the International Professional Feature Film Competition at the 12th NNW International Film Festival.

In 2020 Yuria directed the musical video “Hide & Seek” made for the online screening of the Chopin Village Festival in Tobe, Japan, which won four awards.

In 2022, Yuria directed the PV "33 Thirty three" for JAPAN FILM COMMISION. In November, under Yuria’s directorship, TORANOKO performed “Schoolgirl” which is based on the novel by Osamu Dazai.

PROFILE OF ERIKA MATSUSHITA

Erika Matsushita was born in Ehime, Japan, in 1980.

In 1998 Erika Matsushita completed a course of study at Elmhurst Ballet School in England, majoring in performing arts. In the following year 1999 she completed the “Image Management Film and Television Screen Acting” course while she studied oil painting from the Australian artist Archie Graham. Later in 1999 she undertook a four year course in costume making at the Kalwin International Institute in Thailand, graduating in 2003.During this time she was encouraged to study photography while on a short visit to Madagascar. 

Erika Matsushita completed a foundation course in Period Costume Design at the London College of Fashion in 2004.In the following year 2005 she studied hat design from legendary Mrs Helena and Photography from Asia Pawlowska in Poland.

In 2009 Erika Matsushita directed the short film “Miuro” which was nominated for the Grand Prix at the Kitazawa Film Festival. With her sister Yuria Matsushita, she started the thriving fashion company “Little Black Swan”, which produces timeless fashion accessories. 

In 2011 Erika Matsushita was awarded a Master of Arts Degree by Waseda University’s Graduate School of Global Information and Telecommunication Studies. In 2014 she obtained a Barre Astie Diploma, enabling her to be a qualified Barre Astie instructor.

Despite her hectic workload, Erika Matsushita has retained a passionate interest in the TORANOKO PERFORMING ARTS COMPANY, in which she continues to act as Joint Director with her sister and best friend Yuria Matsushita.
